[She's been putting this off. Actually, she's managed to put it off for a very long time now. But as slow as she may be, she knows when there's something she needs to say.]

Look, this probably isn't how you're supposed to do this sort of thing, but I'd rather get it out there up front and over with. I'm sorry for any... strange things I may have said or done while I wasn't quite feeling like myself.

That goes for Valentine's Day, and more recently. Though I have to admit recently wasn't that bad. In fact, if it was always like that here, I could probably get used to it. Eventually. Enough to hold my complaining down to a dull roar, anyway.

So I was wondering, too, about these filial spirits. If magic is really something here, it probably behooves me to try to see it at work. Anyone willing to volunteer to let me? I'm not saying I'm going to try it out myself, or anything like that. I just want to see it.

I'm not comfortable with all the gory details, but we could start with all the mess with Jane it caused.

Oh yeah, I sort of remember that. At least that something was going on during the finals of the Blush-A-Thon.

... Nevermind. [She has a quick mental image of blushing girls, but she knows perfectly well Quinn means the makeup.]

Uh-huh. So anyway, something happened between you and Tom and Jane?

You didn't think I was going out with him while she was, did you?

[Daria has no grounds for her faint irritation. It had... definitely looked that way for awhile.]

No, not like that! Well...maybe? I dunno, it's a little confusing, I just remember Tom coming over to talk to you and then you came back in all freaked out.

Right. Luceti. There's not exactly anyone else to talk about these things with. And as much as therapy was never her thing, she should probably... talk. Bad things happen when she only talks to herself.]

Jane said she didn't mind if I ended up going out with him, but she was pretty upset when we did. And I was sort of pissed off because she said it was fine.

[Quinn probably could have told her right away that of course it wasn't fine.]

Well, that was rude. She should've just said what she meant instead of giving you some stupid backhanded encouragement and being a jerk about it later! [Quinn doesn't know how THAT feels, not at all.]

I'm pretty sure I was a jerk, too. I wasn't thinking about the fact they'd been going out all that time, or how it looked, or what Jane must have been thinking.

Oh, right. Yeah, that was kind of thoughtless, I guess. [Is it? Quinn's so used to stealing boyfriends from Sandi, but she's beginning to realize Daria's mind doesn't operate the way hers does.]

Thoughtless is one word. [Jackass is another. She has a lot of regrets over how she handled it. Though, she supposes, no regrets over how things turned out - not even the end; it was inevitable, and no one's fault.]

But obviously it all worked out okay in the end.

I guess so. I'm hoping next time works out a bit better.

That might be why 'next time' will probably take awhile.

[And now she gets to wonder what the truth is. Wouldn't it be more likely for her to think she was still with Tom, refusing to acknowledging the relationship ended, or something like that?]

Tom and I broke up a little while ago. College is coming, and it wasn't going to work out.

Yeah. They could have picked a better time. I don't think this is even an improvement on Lawndale.

It's not so bad. And you'd be in pretty bad shape without someone with some common sense around. [And her friends certainly aren't going to provide that.]
