[She's been putting this off. Actually, she's managed to put it off for a very long time now. But as slow as she may be, she knows when there's something she needs to say.]

Look, this probably isn't how you're supposed to do this sort of thing, but I'd rather get it out there up front and over with. I'm sorry for any... strange things I may have said or done while I wasn't quite feeling like myself.

That goes for Valentine's Day, and more recently. Though I have to admit recently wasn't that bad. In fact, if it was always like that here, I could probably get used to it. Eventually. Enough to hold my complaining down to a dull roar, anyway.

So I was wondering, too, about these filial spirits. If magic is really something here, it probably behooves me to try to see it at work. Anyone willing to volunteer to let me? I'm not saying I'm going to try it out myself, or anything like that. I just want to see it.

As weird as it sounds, I think I might have been 'the real Daria' when I was acting like I was thirty, too.

I'd like to think I haven't completely lost objectivity.

Does that mean I was insufferable for a couple weeks there?

[ With his cough finally gone Helios has been meaning to get out the house. His been inside all week, okay? And he actually feels one hundred percent better, thanks to the fact that his condition was, in fact, a shift. This is the perfect opportunity to practice his own magic as well as show someone else. ]

I, ah, wouldn't mind showing you if you'd like. The filial spirits can't be seen themselves, but their powers are quite real. [ Though Helios of all people knows how hard it is for some people to believe such a thing. Many worlds don't have magic and even in his own where magic does exist, it's not believed to actually be real by the general population. But that's due to other circumstances entirely. ]

Really? But how does the Malnosso know who you're gonna be when you get older? That's creepy!

Not insufferable, just...y'know. Not you.

You'd better watch out. I heard them saying you're next.

Creepy, unsettling, disconcerting, and alarming.

[Right. So this is one of the people who say they can perform magic. Alright, then; she's decided to keep a (very slightly) open mind. Enough to keep going, anyway.]

Then I'd like to see it. As long as you're not planning on turning me into a toad, or making me sleep for a hundred years, as your demonstration.

[ Helios will laugh warmly. There's no sense of condensation and it at all. ] Oh, heavens no! That would just be dreadful, I'd never do that to someone. [ Besides those spells where especially tricky and not at all easy to perform. ]

Mm, but I could show you a fireball or two. Those are a bit easier to conjure up on the spot.

That's giving me images of cackling on straw rooftops and blasting away at innocent scarecrows. But since I haven't seen a scarecrow here yet, go ahead.

[ Now that makes Helios laugh out loud. What an image that is. But when he turns on the feed he is neither wearing a wizard robe or hat, sorry to disappoint Daria! Helios will position the camera so that it's showing him standing near his bed. A messy table filled with papers covered in odd symbols is off to the side. Helios looks chipper and quite enthused about the demonstration at least. ]

There, that's better. You can see alright, yes? [ And then his green eyes will glow brightly, turning a few shades brighter than normal and a ball of fire will ignite in his hands, without the help of any outside forces. ] It's, ah, a very simple spell in my world. But, um, there you have it.

[Against her will and better judgment, she is somewhat alarmed; though there's little evidence of it on the deadpan face and flat voice.]

I can see it, but it turns out that's not all there is to believing after all. Do you mind if we try this again, face to face?

If you like, you could drop by the school when we discuss it in class. I usually have a few small demonstrations of what's possible with the filial elemental spells there.

Yeah. I mean, when you're sitting there, strapped to the table, with the needle about to go in your eye, you're in a good position to hear what they say about everyone else, too.
