[She's been putting this off. Actually, she's managed to put it off for a very long time now. But as slow as she may be, she knows when there's something she needs to say.]

Look, this probably isn't how you're supposed to do this sort of thing, but I'd rather get it out there up front and over with. I'm sorry for any... strange things I may have said or done while I wasn't quite feeling like myself.

That goes for Valentine's Day, and more recently. Though I have to admit recently wasn't that bad. In fact, if it was always like that here, I could probably get used to it. Eventually. Enough to hold my complaining down to a dull roar, anyway.

So I was wondering, too, about these filial spirits. If magic is really something here, it probably behooves me to try to see it at work. Anyone willing to volunteer to let me? I'm not saying I'm going to try it out myself, or anything like that. I just want to see it.

Not at all. Anyone is welcome to observe as they will. It's not exactly a subject that everyone would be familiar with, after all, and aside from the filial magic being widely available here, the use and perception of what the word means varies greatly between worlds.

You can say that again. Aside from sleight of hand and gadgets to dupe the credulous, magic doesn't exist where I'm from.

Magic as a term is usually meant to describe something of disbelief to someone who doesn't have the ability, even if it is born as a natural trait. Most worlds share that perception, at least.

I've just spent a couple weeks thinking I was already thirty with a career and a whole new outlook on family. But I have a feeling a lot of people here can top that.

I can agree with your definition, but that doesn't make it happen any more often there. The 'magicians' that pop up there are all proven frauds. Or entertainers, which is the same thing but has the advantage of being honest about the duplicity.

As I said, I know it's not common or available in every world. There always will be magicians or entertainers that are frauds; but some worlds do have people who can use elemental abilities, for instance, though there's usually some sort of force or power that has to exist in the world so they can use it. What's less easily explained is when people who come from earth have a strong variance in whether or not it exists in some tangible form.

Wouldn't it be the same anywhere else? [Reasonably, yes. Reasonably anywhere would have variants that both do and don't have a certain trait - like magical forces. But Earth does seem to be fairly unique in that, here.]

Theoretically, yes, but we haven't exactly come across that yet to know for certain. [Even in some of the identity altering shifts, the worlds themselves didn't seem to have much variance. Or it just wasn't talked about.]

I'm aware of the irony of applying rigorous scientific methods to testing magic, but I'm sort of glad someone's doing it and noticing it anyway.
